I sat right across from him, I don't think he noticed I was there.
I was taking me a train ride, had a yearning just to go somewhere.
When he finally raised his head, I could see the years in his eyes.
He put his hand out to me, "nice to meet ya, guess we're going for a ride.

"He said they call me Irish, I know that sounds a little strange,
But it seems to suit me, and hell, there ain't nothing to a name.
He said I like to ride these trains, cause there ain't nothing else to do.
And I like to tell my stories, if that's alright with you.

(Chorus)

Cause I was once like you, had that fire in my eyes.
And I loved me a girl or two, and they sure thought that I was fine.
Now I like to tell my stories, and I'll throw a smile your way.
If you'll just let Old Irish, be a part of your day.

Well I just listened to him, everything he had to say.
About his time in the army, and the love's he threw away.
He said, I don't know it all, and I surely don't claim to,
But I've lived all these stories, now i'm telling em to you.

(Chorus)

Well, the train finally rolled in, and he was tired I could tell.
He said, I guess we've talked for hours, and these old trains get cold as hell.

Then I lost him somewhere in the crowd, And I looked hard for that old man.
I saw him walking up to someone else, Puttin' out his hand.

(Chorus)

He was once like me, Had that fire in his eyes.
And he loved him a girl or two, and they sure thought that he was fine.
And he told me all his stories, and he threw a smile my way.
And I let old Irish, be a part of my day.
I'm sure glad I let old Irish, be a part of my day.
I came home Friday evening. I worked hard all day long.
From the moment that I stepped in, I could see what was wrong.
The only thing she left me, was a post-it note, that's all.
Now I'm standing here reading, the writing on the wall.

Now I can't hardly blame her, for walking out this way.
I know I should have held her, and there's things I didn't say.
Now these few words she wrote me, I guess they say it all.
Now I'm standing here reading, the writing on the wall.

(Chorus )

I know that it's gone too far, for us to turn back now.
If I could only take it back, I'd, change it all somehow.
Well I can't hide the cold hard truth, the note says it all.
Now I'm standing here reading, the writing on the wall.

(Repeat Chorus)

Well I guess there's no denying, the writing's on the wall.

I see how you look at me, when you think that I don't see.
And it cuts like a knife, deep inside of me.
And I know that you would like to go, back to how it was,
But all you're guilty of, you're just not in love.

(Chorus)

And I don't want to let you go, but you seem to want to, so.
And after all this time, that can't be easy I know.
And I don't place the blame on you. What good would that do?
All you're guilty of, You're just not in love.

Before we fell in love, we were first good friends.
Now I have to let you go, before that friendship ends.
And I know that it must hurt you some, to know that you gave up.
But all you're guilty of, you're just not in love.

(Chorus)

All you're guilty of, you're just not in love.
She fell in love, that's no one's fault.
had other plans, that's what she thought.
She's a little young, she ain't been around,
He's walked that path, covered that ground.
Her California eyes sure shine. His Texas drawl is way behind.

(Chorus)

They're in love, and that's alright. They want to hold each other tight.
How it got this way, nobody knows.
They make an unlikely pair, but they don't seem to care.
Only thing for sure, is they're in love.

She has her doubts that love can last.
So many bad things in her past.
But she still loves the way it feels.
He knows that this whole thing is real.
Her California eyes sure shine. His Texas drawl is way behind.

(Chorus)

They're in love, they're in love, Yeah, they're in love.

Father And Son

Everyday Lover

It's not time, to make a change, just slow down, take it easy.
You're still young, that's your fault, there's so much you have to learn.
Find a girl, settle down, if you want, you can marry.
Look at me, I am old, but I'm happy.
I was once like you are now, and I know that it's not easy.
To be calm, when you've found, something going on.
Take your time, think a lot. Think of everything you've got.
For you will still be here tomorrow, though your dreams may not.

How can I try to explain, when I do, he turns away again.
Well it's always been the same old story.
And from the moment I could talk, I was ordered to listen.
Now there's a way, and I know, that I have to go away.
I know, I have to go.

It's not time, to make a change. Just sit down, take it slowly.
You're still young. That's your fault, There's so much you have to go through.
Find a girl, settle down, if you want, you can marry.
Look at me, I am old, but I'm happy.

Well all the times, that I've cried. Keeping all the things I knew inside.
Well it's hard, but it's harder, to ignore them.
But if they were right, then I'd agree, but it's them that know, not me.
Now there's a way, and I know, that I have to go away.
I know, I have to go.
I'm not your everyday lover. I'm not your basic nighttime fool.
I won't let memories, rule my heart, and I won't lose sleep over you.

I've made my mind up, not to be the same,
As everyone who's earned the right to cry.
I won't let this breakup take up all my time,
I won't even say goodbye.

(Chorus)

I'm not your everyday lover, I'm not your basic nighttime fool.
I won't let memories, rule my heart, and I won't lose sleep over you.
I'll be strong, and I won't crawl. I've made my mind up, I won't fall.
I'd rather work this out, all alone, I don't want to join no crowds.
Even though I've got good reason, now you've gone.
I don't want to cry out loud.

(Chorus)

I'm not your everyday lover

He crossed that old Laguna Madre, in his little fishing boat.
Said he knew every hot spot, and he could steer anything that'd float.
He played hell with those old game warden's, when he laid out his nets,
And he thought that'd he fish forever, nah, this ain't it.

He tried his hand at a little farming, atop that old John Deere.
Ate enough of that ole black dirt, to last him all his years.
And he tried hard to make a living, thought he'd never quit.
Before too long I think he knew, that this ain't it.

(Chorus)

He never dreamed that he'd end up, running an old pawn shop.
He never thought he'd be the answer, to everyone's bad luck.
He check's the clock and it's almost five. Another day it's time to quit.
I wonder if he's thinking now, that this is it?

He thinks back, from time to time, how he sold pigs, to roegelein.
By the truck, and on the hoof, the prices shot right through the roof.
Then one day, after oh so long, he decided to move on,
He wore that hat, had enough of that, nah, this ain't it.

(Chorus)

I've got a funny feeling, nah, this ain't it.
Next time around. I won't make the same mistakes again.
I'll even learn to be your friend and then, come the next time around.
Next time around. I won't let the fires go out this time.
There won't ever be no doubt this time, the next time around.

(Chorus)

Next time around, I'll know just what to do.
I'll laugh and cry with you, like you always wanted to.
Next time around, I won't let you stand alone, I'll be by your side.
And I won't let you down, the next time around.

(Chorus)

No I won't let you down. The next time around.

Chapter 22
By: Sam Neely, Mike Gregory, and Jason Neely  (BMI)

(Chorus)

I'm everybody, looking back at you, and I'm every feeling,
you might be going through.
And I'm every drop of rain, and every bird that flies.
I'm everybody, just look into my eyes.

I am that old man, who needs a helping hand.
I am that teenage boy, who does not understand.
And I am that woman, with the baby down the street.
Who sits and cries at night, for the man that she can't keep.

(Chorus)

I'm on every corner, holding up a sign.
Will work for some food, or a dollar would be fine.
And I'm that little battered child, who's never done no wrong.
All she ever wanted, was a happy home.

(Chorus)

I'm everybody, just look into my eyes.
I only wish that I could find, A book with all the facts.
A page by page description, with the answers in the back.
I'd turn to chapter 22, the part about my life.
Cause it tells you what to do, when you lose a wife.

(Chorus)

I don't know just how this works, there's no drawn out plans.
No written out instructions, between a woman and a man.
First become the best of friends. Next you fall in love.
Then it lasts forever. I thought that's how it was.

So I fought that war and I moved on, and I found somebody new.
We became the best of friends, we followed all the rules.
But now she feels, that she can't stay, she don't know what to do.
I only wish I had that book, and chapter 22.

(Chorus)

I don't know just how this works, there's no drawn out plans.
No written out instructions, between a woman and a man.

American Trilogy

Oh I wish I was, in the land of cotton.
Old times there are not forgotten, look away, look away, look away, Dixieland.
Oh I wish I was in Dixie, away, away. In Dixieland I'll make my stand, to live and die in Dixie.

Cause Dixieland, that's where I was born. Early Lord one frosty morn.
Look away, look away, look away, Dixieland.

(Chorus)

Glory glory hallelujah, glory glory, hallelujah.
Glory glory hallelujah, his truth is marching on.

So hush, little children, and don't you cry.
You know your daddy's, bound to die.
And all my trials Lord, soon be over.

(Chorus)

Glory glory hallelujah, glory glory, hallelujah.
Glory glory hallelujah, his truth is marching on.
